HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones‘ ended in May of this year and we’re still learning fun new behind-the-scenes facts about the series. The latest comes from Carice van Houten who played Melisandre. After the show’s multiple Emmy Awards, the cast and crew are once again going through interviews about their time on the iconic series. Previously, the actress has shared that she was once asked to play Cersei Lannister for the network and that her own character was a “mystery” to her, but this new revelation is just a bit of fun we can all enjoy.
While talking about performing as The Red Witch, van Houten shared how difficult having to speak in High Valyrian could be for the cast:
“It was so hard. I mean, Emilia (Clarke) had it way worse than me, of course, but I remember learning those lines. There’s no reference whatsoever. It’s like, ‘Am I talking Hebrew? Greek? What is this language?’ But it was fun because I also felt like if I made a mistake, nobody will notice.”
However, the moment this really mattered for was in the sixth season when Kit Harington‘s Jon Snow was brought back to life:
“The whole revival, the resurrection of Jon Snow, I improvised the s— out of that. Nobody saw it. I mean, I’m sure there’s a few people that said, ‘I knew what you were saying was wrong.’ I’m sorry. But, you know, it was a tricky time. It was a long day, and I just didn’t know my lines.”
Of course, we all know that she really used Snow’s lifestyle to resurrect him:
Kidding aside, I love that this was done and the vast majority of viewers, myself included, would have no idea until reading or hearing this interview. After this fun detail, van Houten would go on to share her thoughts about the ‘Game of Thrones’ series finale and how she compares it to the world we live in:
“I just love the fact that the whole throne was blown away. The whole thing was gone. I really loved it, and also the randomness of talking about who’s going to be king. The silliness of it was very smart. I thought, ‘This is what life is. Some dumbo can become president. That’s the world we live in. We just sort of go, ‘Uh, that guy.’ It was smart that it was just sort of silly. I really liked it, to be honest.”
Are you entertained that Carice van Houten made up what she was saying to bring Jon Snow back from the dead on HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’? Do you find it surprising that no one interjected when she wasn’t repeating what was in the script? What do you think of van Houten’s take on the series finale?
