John Barrowman

Despite having died at the end of ‘Arrow’ Season 5, it seems John Barrowman will be back as Malcolm Merlyn for the final season of ‘Arrow’ this fall. The news that came to us from the star of the show himself, Stephen Amell, while talking about a promise he made to Barrowman before the man turned 50.

It all happened while at Fan Expo Boston, and Amell broke the news that fan-favorite Barrowman would be back by stating:

“It’s part of the deal, every ten years I put on a tiny suit and I deliver John Barrowman a birthday cake. He’s back in the show in Season 8, and that was actually a rider that he put into his contract, so…”

Of course, it is not the first time that Merlyn has reappeared since his death, making a special cameo during last year’s ‘Elseworlds’ crossover event, but this seems a bit more substantial and fits in with other resurrections we have heard about for the final season, including the return of Merlyn’s son Tommy Merlyn and super-villain Adrian Chase.

And it makes sense to have Barrowman back since he was around all the way back in Season 1, making his premiere in the fourth episode, titled ‘An Innocent Man’ and being a major player not only on ‘Arrow,’ but also in ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and ‘The Flash.’Of course, what his role in the final season will be is unknown, as are most of the plot details of the final season since the 10 episode finale for the series has been kept very secretive.

What are your thoughts on the return of Malcom Merlyn? Do you have any theories on how they might be using his character?
