CBS All Access is clearly digging the response to their science fiction outings with “Star Trek” as the streaming service has just optioned the rights to reboot ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’! The original novel by Walter Tevis was published in 1963 and was made into a cult classic film in 1976 which starred David Bowie. Now, we’ll see an ongoing series based around the novel’s concepts.
The new series will be inspired by the original novel and film which follows “an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future.”

The new iteration is going to have Alex Kurtzman write, executive-produce, and also be a co-showrunner with Jenny Lumet and John Hlavin. On top of this, Kurtzman will be directing though it isn’t clear if he is expected to tackle every episode or just some of them.
As to the upcoming series, Kurtzman and Lumet have stated:
“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impact on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species.”
I love the concept behind the novel and felt that it was worth reading when I was younger. While some of the technology from the book is now a bit outdated, the ideas and overall plot is still a solid inspiration for a new series which I’m eager to find out more details as they are released.
