The 1979 novel ‘The Right Stuff‘ by Tom Wolfe is serving as the inspiration for the first season of a new National Geographic series which you can now check out the trailer for. This series is “the story of our nation’s drive to be the first in space and the adrenaline-fueled test pilots who would find instant fame by becoming NASA’s Original Mercury 7.” Things are kicking off at the height of the Cold War where the United States and the Soviet Union are both trying to land the first man on the moon.
As to what we can expect from the series, National Geographic has released this description:
To combat a national sentiment of fear and decline, the U.S. government conceives of NASA’s Project Mercury, igniting a space race with the Soviets and making instant celebrities of a handful of the military’s adrenaline-fueled test pilots. These individuals, who come to be known as the Mercury Seven, are forged into heroes long before they have achieved a single heroic act. At the heart of a historic drama populated by deeply human characters, archrivals John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams) and Alan Shepard (Jake McDorman) jockey to become the first man in space.
This first trailer really serves as a featurette as we hear retired Navy test pilot Dave Kennedy sharing “What we did today is to try to give our actors exposure to the real world of experimental flight test. It’s important when a production understands how important it is to get this kind of exposure” at the Kennedy Space Center.

My only complaint is that we didn’t have a chance to see more of the actual show! Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Warner Horizon Scripted Television are responsible for bringing the new series to life. The cast for ‘The Right Stuff’ includes Colin O’Donoghue, Eric Ladin, Patrick Fischler, Nora Zehetner, Eloise Mumford, Shannon Lucio and Josh Cooke.
The plan for the show is a multi-season event which will follow through to the Apollo Space Program and beyond!
