Brandon Routh Will Be The 'Kingdom Come' Superman In The 'Crisis On Infinite Earths' Crossover
Warner Bros.

We just learned that Brandon Routh would return to a role he portrayed over a decade ago– Superman.  The actor, who now plays a completely different DC hero, The Atom, will portray an alternate version of Superman in the upcoming CW “Arrowverse” crossover ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ and will share the screen with Tyler Hoechlin, who already plays Superman on ‘Supergirl’ and the others.  Now it has been revealed how Routh’s version fits in– he’s the ‘Kingdom Come’ Superman.

This information has been shared by The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez:

‘Kingdom Come’ was a bestselling miniseries published in 1996, written by Mark Waid and painted by Alex Ross.  This story was set many years in the future, after most of the modern superheroes had retired and been replaced by a new reckless breed of antiheroes.

Although the ages of the characters aren’t spelled out, Superman has wrinkles and gray temples, but his aging has been slowed by his Kryptonian physiology.  Batman’s hair is completely white and thinning, and his body is basically shot, so that would imply that these characters are at least seventy.

Routh is 39 years old, so he’s a little shy of that.  Hoechlin is 31, so the two actors aren’t even that far apart in age.  Even in the original ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, the two Supermen– the Golden and Silver Age versions– were roughly 20 years apart.

Guess we’ll see how they handle the two Supermen in this crossover.

‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ will air three installments in December and two in January.  The episodes will span all five “Arrowverse” shows– ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Supergirl’, the new ‘Batwoman’, and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, but it hasn’t been revealed in what order the shows will join in on the story.
