Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
ABC

The upcoming seventh season of ABC’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ will be its last.  This news comes just before the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ panel at SDCC.

As Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb recalled, the show was originally expected to end with Season 5, and that season and its finale– entitled “The End”– were structured accordingly.  So while fans may be sad to see this series go, they actually got two more seasons than expected, and as Loeb explained, this way they can wrap the series up properly, which is a luxury fans of sci-fi TV don’t always get.

Loeb discussed the reason why the show is embarking on a final season and hinted at what viewers can expect:

“So we can actually build a season that will tie up any threads that are there. To make sure that we come to a conclusion that’s satisfying to the fans, to the cast, to Marvel, and to ABC.

“When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death. Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward.  The series was originally conceived as a synergistic project to complement and play off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but after Marvel Studios broke away from Marvel Entertainment in 2015, that connection was severed.

The series ‘Agent Carter’ was sort of a spinoff from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ although it took place in a different time period.  Marvel TV attempted to set up other spinoffs, ‘Marvel’s Most Wanted’ and a series featuring Ghost Rider, but neither was picked up.  A new ‘Ghost Rider’ series is coming to Hulu, featuring the same lead actor, Gabriel Luna, but it is not a spinoff of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and tells a different story.

Were you a fan?  Are you sad to see ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ go?

Season 6 is now airing, and Season 7 will arrive sometime in 2020.
