Let me start by repeating something as stated many times by other people writing about this story, at this point in time this is nothing but a rumor with only a handful of unnamed sources claiming it could be true.

The rumor in question has to do with Andy Serkis (you know, the man who has brought such memorable characters as Gollum, King Kong, Ulysses Klaue, Caesar, and Supreme Leader Snoke to like) being considered for a role in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ film. Which makes sense when you think about it since Reeves and Serkis worked together in the last two ‘War of the Planet of the Apes‘ films, and since, you know, Serkis is an amazing actor who brings life and energy to any role he plays, and would be an amazing choice for a Batman villain, especially if he plays the villain that is being suggested over at the site Batman-on-Film.

They are guessing that Serkis might be in the running to play the Penguin, as according to Batman-on-Film, Reeves and company have a casting call out for an actor who is ” 20-40…Gotham City mobster — a short, obese man with a long nose…” Personally, I think it would be something really special to see Serkis dive into a character like the Penguin, especially considering the many shades the character has and the various ways he has been portrayed in the past, from the cartoony versions in the animated shows or the Adam West ‘Batman,’ to the darker noir take in ‘Batman Returns,’ all the way to the more eccentric modern version in the recent ‘Gotham‘ series.

To be fair though, if they decide to cast Serkis in the film, any role would be welcomed. The man has range, and I think he really excels in these kinds of big-budget, over-the-top spectacle movies.

What are your thoughts on Serkis joining the cast of ‘The Batman?’ Do you think he would fit in with the world Reeves is trying to build? Or do you see it as a mistake? Feel free to share your opinions on the matter below!
