harold ramis ghostbusters

We knew that a ‘Ghostbusters 3’ including Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson was in pre-development limbo even before Ramis passed away, though now it seems like the idea could happen after all. While it is hard to imagine Murray signing off on this after everything he has said about returning to the franchise, it sounds like at least Ramis might be back. Ivan Reitman mentioned at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 that 2019 might mark the return of the originals Ghostbusters.

Reitman was outright asked if they could ever come back and “recreate” the actor in the style used in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘ which lead to Reitman stating:

“It’s possible… it’s something we’re thinking of. [Audience ‘Oooohs’]. HINT. [Laughs]”

He wasn’t clear if he actually meant de-aging any of the living actors or digitally recreating Egon at this time. But with fans having such mixed responses to both technologies at this time, it would be hard to see this going over well either way.

Rami’s daughter Violet Ramis Stiel weighed in on the idea when asked where she stated that:

“It’s bizarre. Personally, for me, it is hard to imagine that people would accept it, but who knows. The technology now is amazing.”

She isn’t totally against the idea off the bat. However, if she is going to sign off on it the end product is going to have to be something exceptional:

“I try to think what would he have thought. If it’s great and it works, then good. And if there is a problem, then obviously no.”

If this does end up happening we’ll have to see Reitman pitch Violet with a compelling case and story. As he still has to sell Murray on reprising his role, this is an idea I wouldn’t get my hopes up for if you don’t mind CGI recreation.

Would you be okay with a digital Egon fighting ghosts in ‘Ghostbusters 3’? Do you think that Reitman was seriously considering this or just saying it could be an option? Share your thoughts below!
