It appears that the villains for Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ are confirmed, as The GWW reports that a casting description has been released detailing four characters that are set to appear in the film. There is really only one surprise, as The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Riddler, have been rumored to be included for some time now. The fourth villain is the pyromaniac Firefly.
Here is what Reeves and his producers are said to be looking for.
The Riddler may be the main villain of ‘The Batman’, as it is believed that the various criminals that appear will have varying degrees of importance. The casting description lists him as “a criminal mastermind in Gotham City who takes delight in incorporating riddles and puzzles into his schemes, leaving them as clues for the authorities to solve.” An actor of any ethnicity, between the ages of 30 and 40 is sought.
Frank Gorshin, John Astin, Jim Carrey, and most recently, Cory Michael Smith have portrayed him in the past.
The Penguin, a.k.a. Oswald Cobblepot is listed as a “Gotham City mobster… a short, obese man with a long nose, and he uses high-tech umbrellas as weapons.” A male actor of any ethnicity between the ages of 20 and 40 is sought.
The Penguin has been portrayed by Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, and Robin Lord Taylor. Taylor’s depiction on ‘Gotham’ broke from tradition, as the actor is tall and thin, whereas the character is usually short and overweight.
A female actor of any ethnicity, between the ages of 20 and 30 is being sought to play Selina Kyle, Catwoman, a “Gotham City burglar [who] wears a tight one-piece outfit and uses a bullwhip for a weapon.”
Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt all played her in the 1960s, while Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, Camren Bicondova, and Lili Simmons have also portrayed Selina Kyle. Halle Berry starred in a movie called ‘Catwoman’ but it had absolutely nothing in common with the comic book character.
Finally, there is Firefly, a.k.a. Garfield Lynns, “a professional arsonist known as the “Firefly”.” He “attempts to burn all the places that he lacked the privilege to go as an orphan child.” Any ethnicity, ages of 20-30. This will be the first live-action depiction of Firefly, although he has appeared many times in animation and video games.
At one point, it was rumored that there could be up to six villains, but it was stressed that they would not all have large parts, so there might actually be more than these in the final film.
Robert Pattinson will portray Bruce Wayne/Batman in ‘The Batman’, which is said to include Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, and possibly even Robin! Filming is expected to begin later this year to be released on June 25, 2021.
