The Russo Brothers Are Bringing 'Magic: The Gathering' To Netflix

The most popular fantasy card game of all time is getting an animated series on Netflix as ‘Magic: The Gathering’ is being brought to life. Not only will Hasbro’s Allspark Animation be animating this Wizards of The Coast but it is all being made possible by The Russo Brothers, so you know that we’ll have something epic to look forward to. Even if you don’t like card games, this should be great news for fantasy and genre fans everywhere. Over the past 26-years, the game has created an in-depth and immersive fantasy world through the cards themselves, companion guides, and novels.

While The Russo Brothers will have a full set of rich lore to pull from, they’ll also be bringing us an original tale set in the world of ‘Magic: The Gathering.’

According to The Russos:

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us.”

As these two are some of the biggest creators in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it really comes as no surprise that they’d be fully drawn into other areas of geekdom as well, and I’m eager to see what they put together for us.

Joining the Russo Brothers as executive producers will be Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina who are also writing the series. Yoriaki Mochizuki is slated to also be a co-executive producer and the supervising director. Todd Makurath, Eric Calderon, and Dave Newberg of Octopie will be producing with Mike Larocca and Isaac Krauss serving as executive producers. Finally, Bardel Entertainment is handling the animation.

Netflix’s head of anime John Derderian added in that:

“Magic is a beloved global franchise with a massively engaged fan base that has only continued to grow over the last 25 years. There’s no one better suited to bring this story to audiences around the world than Joe and Anthony Russo, whose talent for genre storytelling is unmatched, as is demonstrated by their central role in creating some of the biggest box office hits of all time.”

With Derderian’s involvement, we might very well be getting an anime take on ‘Magic: The Gathering’ and not just an animated series.

This isn’t the first time which we’ve heard of a story being brought to life from this franchise as back in 2014, Simon Kinberg was slated to develop a feature film which never happened.

Are you looking forward to an ongoing tale set in the ‘Magic: The Gathering’ universe? Do you wish this ended up being live-action or are thrilled that even an animated one is happening? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
