It has been confirmed that the next ‘Star Wars’ movie will come from the minds of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of HBO’s phenomenon ‘Game of Thrones’.  At the beginning of this month, Disney announced that the next three movies in this blockbuster franchise would be released on December 16, 2022, Dec. 20, 2024, and Dec. 18, 2026, but at the time, no further information was given.

Benioff and Weiss were known to be working on an original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy, rumored to be set during the time of the “Old Republic,” but Rian Johnson was also known to be crafting a separate trilogy, and there was still the possibility of stand-alone movies, although hope for those have seemingly evaporated, following the poor performance of ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’.

During a Q&A at the Moffett Nathanson Media & Communications Summit on Tuesday, Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger stated:

“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are famous for ‘Game of Thrones’, and the next movie we release will be theirs. We’re not saying anything more about that.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has stated before that Benioff and Weiss were in discussions with Johnson in crafting their separate trilogies, but there have been persistent rumors that Johnson’s trilogy may have been scrapped, following the poor reception received by his last film ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’.

The new film won’t arrive until three years after this December’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, which wraps up the classic “Skywalker Saga.”  That will allow Benioff and Weiss time to develop their storyline, not to mention time for audiences to rest and rekindle their desire to see another ‘Star Wars’ movie on the big screen.

At the time that the release dates were announced, it was also hinted that the three movies may not be consecutive entries in a single trilogy, but a mix, similar to the releases of ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Solo’ which were unleashed between installments of the “Skywalker Saga.”  But considering that even with those releases, the main trilogy pics were two years apart, as are these upcoming flicks, it sounds more likely that these dates are for Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy, Parts 1, 2, and 3.  But that’s just an assumption at this time.

Iger wrapped up by saying:

“We’re hard at work [figuring out what’s next] already.  Three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but really gear up for the next film’s release.”
