Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, and Lin Shaye have been set to recur onShowtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’, a follow up to the hit series, ‘Penny Dreadful’.  Both originated with creator John Logan.  ‘City of Angels’ switches locales from Victorian London to Los Angeles in the 1930s.

[‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels] opens in 1938 Los Angeles; a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Madigan’s character is named Miss Adelaide Finnister and is the mother of Kerry Bishé‘s “charismatic radio evangelist” Sister Molly.  “Miss Adelaide shrewdly manages the church’s finances and oversees the growing religious empire.”

Spiner portrays Captain Ned Vanderhoff, the boss of Daniel Zovatto‘s Tiago Vega (the show’s main character) and Nathan Lane‘s Lewis Michener, at the Hollenbeck police station in Boyle Heights.  Vanderhoff is struggling to hold together this town that in the wake of a grisly murder.

Shaye’s character, Dottie Minter, is a “friend and ally” to Michener.  “Cunning, wry and clever, Dottie is an invaluable operative in the battle against Third Reich espionage in Los Angeles.”

The cast also includes Natalie Dormer as shapeshifting demon Magda, Johnathan Nieves, and Jessica Garza as Tiago’s younger siblings, Mateo and Josefina, and Adriana Barraza as their mother, Maria.  Rory Kinnear, who starred on the original ‘Penny Dreadful’ will return to play the German Dr. Peter Craft.

Madigan was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in 1985’s ‘Twice in a Lifetime’, and won the Golden Globe for ‘Roe vs. Wade’.  She has had roles on ‘Fringe’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘ER’, and ‘Carnivàle’, and has starred in movies such as ‘Field of Dreams’, ‘Uncle Buck’, Gone Baby Gone’, and ‘Streets of Fire’.

Spiner recently starred on Cinemax’s ‘Outcast’, and has also appeared on ‘Warehouse 13’, ‘Fresh Hell’, and more, but his most famous role is that of Data on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’.

Shaye is no stranger to horror, having appeared in the original ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, and the two ‘Critters’ movies.  More recently, she played Elise Rainier in the ‘Insidious’ series and Paulina Zander in the ‘Ouija’ franchise, not to mention she was in ‘Big Ass Spider!’.  She is also known for playing creepy old ladies in comedies such as ‘Dumb and Dumber’, ‘There’s Something About Mary’, and ‘Kingpin’.

Showtime has not yet announced a release date for ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’, but check back for more information as it arrives.
