Shades of ‘American Horror Story’! Rory Kinnear, who starred as John Clare/The Creature (a.k.a. Frankenstein’s Monster) on the original ‘Penny Dreadful’ series is coming back for a role in the new off-shoot ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’. Luckily for Kinnear, his new character won’t demand so much makeup.
Dr. Peter Craft, a successful German pediatrician and the head of the German-American Bund, an organization he hopes will keep the United States isolated from the growing threat of war in Europe.
John Logan, who created both ‘Penny Dreadful’ series said:
“It’s no secret that Rory is one of my favorite actors on the planet, and working with him in the original series was inspiring. So much so that I wrote this part for him, and I’m thrilled he’ll be joining us in the City of Angels.”
Another supernatural anthology series, ‘American Horror Story’ uses many of the same actors in various seasons, so it’s entirely possible that more stars from the first will turn up in the second.
‘City of Angels’ is described as a “spiritual descendant” of the first, as it takes place in a totally different location and time period– Los Angeles in the years leading up to World War II.
City of Angels begins in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. It will explore pre-World War II Los Angeles, from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.
As Logan explains:
“In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”
Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is the focal character of this series, who becomes embroiled in “an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles.” Broadway legend Nathan Lane will portray Tiago’s partner and mentor, Lewis Michener. ‘Game of Thrones” Natalie Dormer will play shapeshifting demon Magda. Johnathan Nieves and Jessica Garza have been cast as Tiago’s younger siblings, Mateo and Josefina, while Adriana Barraza plays their mother, Maria.
‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ is expected to begin production sometime this year.
