‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ has gained a fairly big name costar. Tony Award winner Nathan Lane has signed on to star opposite Daniel Zovatto, the show’s lead. With the series set in 1938 Los Angeles, Zovatto portrays Tiago Vega, a police detective who is “investigating a grisly murder that becomes an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles.” Lane will play a veteran LAPD officer and Tiago’s partner and mentor, Lewis Michener. But Michener may have a dark side, as he is described as “wise to the ways of the world and ruthless in pursuit of his goals.”
Lane is mainly known for his work on the stage, having been nominated for six Tony Awards and winning three, for ‘Angels in America’, ‘The Producers’, and ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’. On television, he has been nominated for three Primetime Emmys for his guest-role as Pepper Saltzman on ‘Modern Family’, as well as three additional times for appearances on ‘The Good Wife’, ‘Mad About You’, and ‘Frasier’. He was also seen in the miniseries ‘American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ Simpson’. As an acclaimed film actor, he has earned Golden Globe nominations for his work in ‘The Producers’ and ‘The Birdcage’. And of course, he is part of nearly everyone’s childhood, having provided the voice of Timon in the original ‘Lion King’ and in various follow-ups and spinoffs.
The cast of ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ also includes Johnathan Nieves and Jessica Garza, as Tiago’s younger siblings Mateo and Josefina, and Natalie Dormer as Magda, a shapeshifting demon.
Both the original ‘Penny Dreadful’ and ‘City of Angels’ were created by John Logan, who will write and executive produce the new series, which is set in pre-World War II LA, and will explore the deep Mexican-American culture and its folklore and religion, as well as pre-war politics and intrigue.
Stay tuned for updates on this series as it develops.
