We’ve been talking about ‘I Am Mother’ since last year, and I’m thrilled that Netflix has finally released the first for it! The new movie shows us a future generation of humanity which is being brought up entirely by a robotic mother who is programmed to repopulate mankind after our species goes extinct. Netflix really seems to have hit a home run on casting with this one with Rose Byrne set to be the robot central to the film and Oscar winner Hilary Swank being part of the cast! On top of this, the robot in question has been created by WETA Workshop who is best known for their work on the “Lord of the Rings” franchise and the first ‘Avatar’ movie.

The concept of an extinction level event that wipes out humanity combined with artificial intelligence helping guide humanity isn’t one which we’ve seen deeply explored in feature films let alone in popular fiction.

The story follows a lonely teenage girl, ‘Daughter’ (Rugaard), who is the first of a new
generation of humans raised by ‘Mother’ (Byrne) – a kindly robot designed to repopulate
the earth following the extinction of mankind. But their unique bond is threatened when
a blood-drenched woman (Swank) inexplicably arrives, calling into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world – and her Mother’s intentions.
