It is being reported that John Cena is in talks to join James Gunn‘s ‘The Suicide Squad’, although no further details have been released.  He will join Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and apparently Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis.

Gunn reportedly wrote in the character The Peacemaker, with an eye on casting his ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ buddy Dave Bautista to play him.  Bautista, incidentally, is also a former WWE wrestler, like Cena.  However, Bautista recently signed on to star in Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’, an original zombie movie headed to Netflix.  With Bautista unavailable, it’s possible that Cena or possibly even Elba could take that role.

Elba was originally cast to take over the role of Deadshot, who was portrayed by Will Smith in the 2016 movie ‘Suicide Squad’, but due to other filming commitments, Smith was unable to return for ‘The Suicide Squad’, which is said to be a reboot more than a sequel to the other movie.  But soon after, it was announced that Elba would instead be given another role, at least in part to allow Smith to potentially return in future films.

Should Cena sign on, it’s possible that he could take the Peacemaker role, while Elba could potentially appear as a character with a long history with the comic book ‘Suicide Squad’, but who has not appeared in the films yet– Bronze Tiger.  But that’s just speculation on my part.

According to reports, Gunn also included the characters King Shark, Ratcatcher, and Polka Dot Man in his script, but it was also reported that only Deadshot and Harley Quinn would return from the first movie, and it has since been rumored that Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and Davis’ Amanda Waller will be in ‘The Suicide Squad’ after all.

Much like Bautista and Dwayne Johnson, Cena has transitioned quite nicely from the WWE ring to be a major box office draw.  He has excelled in both action roles, in movies like ‘Bumblebee’, and ‘The Wall’, and in comedies such as ‘Trainwreck’, ‘Daddy’s Home Too’, and ‘Blockers’.

Production is expected to begin soon, but ‘The Suicide Squad’ won’t arrive in theaters until August 6, 2021.

What do you think of John Cena joining the cast?  What character do you think he’ll play?
