Jai Courtney has revealed that he will reprise his role as Captain Boomerang in James Gunn‘s ‘The Suicide Squad’. It was previously believed that only Margot Robbie would return for the second movie, which is being described as a complete reboot. The character Deadshot/Floyd Lawton will be back, but with Idris Elba in the role, replacing Will Smith.
In an interview with Business Insider, Courtney revealed:
“We’re getting ready to shoot in a few months’ time. There’s not much else I can reveal about it but, yeah, you’ll be seeing Boomerang back for sure…. “I’m happy, it’s going to be fun. It will be different, for sure, but it’s going to be great.”
‘The Suicide Squad’ was written by Gunn, who is also directing. This is reportedly not a direct sequel to the 2016 movie helmed by David Ayer. According to early reports, Gunn’s script incorporates new characters, Peacemaker (with an eye on Dave Bautista to star), King Shark, Ratcatcher, and Polka-Dot Man.
In the comics, Captain Boomerang is a fairly straightforward criminal, but in the film, Courtney’s portrayal is a more off-kilter, wide-eyed sociopath with a unicorn fetish. It should be interesting to see what Gunn cooks up for him.
As Courtney stated, filming is expected to begin soon, however, ‘The Suicide Squad’ isn’t due in theaters until August 2021, over two years from now.
Warner Brothers enlisted Gunn to write and direct ‘The Suicide Squad’ after he had been cut loose from Disney after some offensive old tweets resurfaced. However, after months of being unable to replace him on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3’, Disney hired him back. But now, they must wait for him to complete ‘The Suicide Squad’ before he can return to the Marvel movie.
So far, there hasn’t been any additional casting news, but as the production grows closer, expect more information to surface.
Are you glad that Jai Courtney will be back as Captain Boomerang in ‘The Suicide Squad’?
