Tyrese Gibson has spilled the beans on his role in the upcoming Sony picture ‘Morbius’.  The ‘Fast & Furious’ star released a short video on Instagram with the hashtag “#AgentStroud.”

Simon Stroud is a former CIA agent turned mercenary who hunted both Morbius and the Man-Wolf in the comics.

‘Morbius’ has been filming for almost a month, with Daniel Espinosa (‘Safe House’) directing, with a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.  Jared Leto stars as Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disease, which leads to him transforming into a pseudo-vampire.  The film also stars Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, and Jared Harris.  Avi Arad, Lucas Foster, and Matt Tolmach are producing.

Like last year’s ‘Venom’, ‘Morbius’ is based on a character usually associated with Spider-Man, but the film will not likely contain any reference to the Wall-Crawler.  It has not been disclosed whether or not ‘Morbius’ takes place in the same universe as ‘Venom’, though.

Last October, ‘Venom’ took a bite out of naysayers when, despite toxic advance buzz, it opened at #1 with a record-breaking $80 million, nearly double the amount made by the far more acclaimed ‘A Star is Born’ which opened the same weekend.

It went on to make $855 million worldwide.  If Sony was unsure about these Spider-Man-free Spider-Man-based movies, that had to have come as a welcome assurance that there is an audience there.

A ‘Venom’ sequel is in the works, and Sony is eyeing ‘Morbius’ to hopefully launch its own franchise.

Will it work?  We’ll find out on July 31, 2020 when ‘Morbius’ hits theaters.
