Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off ‘Morbius’ is close to finding its leading lady.  Adria Arjona is in early talks to play Martine Bancroft, who, in the comics, was engaged to Michael Morbius, who will be played by Jared Leto in the film.

In the comics, Morbius suffers from a rare blood disease.  Along with best friend Emil Nikos, Morbius finds what he thinks is a cure, but instead, the process transforms him into a  pseudo-vampire, a being with super human powers who needs to feast on human blood to survive.  Nikos and Martine are among his first meals.  But as in the case of real vampires, Martine was reborn as a vampire-like creature herself.

So far, Leto is the only actor attached to ‘Morbius’, which is set to be directed by ‘Life”s Daniel Espinosa.  The creators of Netflix’s ‘Lost in Space’, Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, are handling the script.  In addition to Morbius himself, Emil Nikos and Martine Bancroft, the film is said to feature the villain Loxias Crown, who is most likely an adaptation of the vampire-like character Hunger from the comics.

‘Morbius’ is expected to begin production in February for a July 2020 release.

Earlier this year, Arjona appeared in ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ and the comedy ‘Life of the Party’.  Last year, she played Dorothy on NBC’s limited series ‘Emerald City’ and before that, she starred on ‘True Detective’ as Emily.

Next year, she will be seen in the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Good Omens’, Michael Bay’s Netflix original action film ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds, and ‘Triple Frontier’ which also stars Ben Affleck, Garrett Hedlund, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, and Pedro Pascal.

‘Morbius’ will be the first Sony “Spider-Verse” movie after ‘Venom’ which racked up a surprising $8.5 million at the global box office.  Like that film, ‘Morbius’ most likely won’t be connected to the present ‘Spider-Man’ films, but it’s not yet known whether or not it will take place in the same reality as ‘Venom’.
