Now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox, may fans are curious what the monster studio plans to do with Fox’s existing franchises. Fox’s Emma Watts says that the Fox team will continue developing movies in their tentpole franchises, specifically mentioning ‘Kingsman’, ‘Alien’, ‘Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Avatar’.
“We intend to do our part, and it is in that spirit that we will continue to create new stories.”
James Cameron is currently working on two ‘Avatar’ sequels, with plans for even more should these prove successful. The first is expected to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2020, with the third out on December 17, 2021. After that, the series will take a break. Depending on audience reaction, should it be determined that another sequel is needed, it already has a release date of December 20, 2024, with the fifth set for December 19, 2025.
‘Kingsman: The Great Game’ expands that brand but is a prequel set in the early 1900s, and at this time, it is not believed that Taron Egerton or Colin Firth will appear. That picture is expected to be released on February 14, 2020.
While Fox may be working on projects for ‘Alien’ and ‘Planet of the Apes’, those are a little vaguer. A Neill Blomkamp ‘Alien’ film with Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was shelved in favor of Ridley Scott’s plans, but after ‘Alien: Covenant’ fizzled at the box office, there don’t seem to be any concrete plans. But for fans of the franchise, a series of short films is being released in celebration of the brand’s 40th anniversary.
‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ seemed to have wrapped up that film series, but there was some discussion of making more films after that. It remains to be seen if Disney and Fox carry on with that storyline or if they try rebooting the franchise.
