It looks like Fox is betting big on the box office success of ‘War for the Planet of the Apes‘ and believes that this year it could take home the Oscar for Best Picture! 20th Century Fox is so full of love for the film and the critic’s responses that they will be making their largest push ever for a nomination.
Since the original was nominated for Costumes and Musical Score and having won for makeup achievements, there have only been a scattering of nominations among the sequels. The studio believes that not only is this installment better than their push for Andy Serkis to get a Best Actor award but that the film could go all in for Best Picture. Not only that, but they’re going to target just about every other award that it would be eligible for as well.
They plan to launch a campaign that will “make it about the movie.”
Fox’s former chief and producer for the film Peter Chernin states that:
“In the past, people probably have tended to sort of genre-ize it and sort of look at it, well, as if it is a genre movie and not take it as seriously as they should, and I think that you know our view is that this movie deserves serious consideration. Certainly, it’s been made with a level of ambition, care, and attention that’s as meaningful as anything I’ve ever worked on. I’m incredibly proud of this movie, and I do believe that on almost any level of storytelling, character development, narrative thrusts, or epic-ness, this is an extraordinary movie.”
The studio and Chernin are betting big on this one and for a good reason. It might quite well have been the best Planet of the Apes film made so far! From a compelling story to incredible visuals and outstanding acting.
