There are a lot of big names being talked to about joining Disney’s upcoming ‘A Wrinkle in Time‘ but we’ve just learned that Storm Reid (’12 Years a Slave’,’Sleight’) has taken the starring role. She’ll be directed by Ava DuVernay (‘Selma’,’Middle of Nowhere’) and also rumored to be in negotiations to join the cast are Hollywood Heavyweights Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling. Needless to say, Disney has been betting big on their live action movies and this might be one of their most ambition projects yet. The script was tackled by Jennifer Lee (‘Frozen’) who will be co-directing the film.
The movie is based on the 1965 novel by the same name which was written by Madeleine L’Engle. It follows Meg, who Reid will be playing, whose father has gone missing. She joins her younger brothers Charles and classmate Calvin go on a whirlwind adventure with aliens to not only find their father but save the Earth. The aliens are a trio of travelers who can open rifts between worlds and are who the A-Listers above are rumored to be playing.
While already a rising star, a leading role in a hit Disney film is going to open doors to Reid that will provide years of opportunity. While not all of Disney’s live-action films have been hits, more often than not they have garnered positive reviews and viewership. This also marks another instance of Disney’s commitment to including diversity in their films which if any Hollywood studio I’m happy to see doing this above others it would be the one who with their own properties and Disney and Marvel umbrellas have some of the most influence in film trends.
