Although filming has just finished on ‘The Wolverine,’ Hugh Jackman may not be hanging up those adamantium claws anytime soon. It’s being reported that the actor is currently in negotiations to reprise the mutant superhero in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ sequel, ‘X-Men: Day of Future Past’.

This may not be much of a surprise to the fanboy and fangirls of the franchise. Since the announcement by director Bryan Singer that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen are already on board for the film, it seemed logical that Wolverine would be included. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is based on the two issue comic arc written by Chris Claremont. In it, the present X-Men team are warned to stop a key event from happening in order to prevent an alternate future which saw internment camps for mutants and giant robot Sentinels patrolling the land for their capture. The ‘First Class’ team would portray the “present” X-Men from the comic books while the Stewart, McKellen and Jackson would portray their alternate future timeline alter egos.

If negotiations go well, this would mark the 7th film that Jackman has played Wolverine. Hints of a possible tie in to the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy were seen in ‘X-Men: First Class’ with Wolverine’s rather expletive cameo. How his current film, ‘Wolverine,’ will tie in to ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is currently unknown. Although both Jackman and director James Mangold have said this installment of Wolverine’s life will play like a stand alone film, it is highly unlikely that Fox and Mark Millar (who currently oversees all the Marvel properties for the studio) will not take advantage of putting in an Easter egg much like Disney does with their Marvel movies.

It’s unclear how much screen time Jackman would actually have, but one thing is for certain: the banter between him and the other versions of the X-Men team will undoubtedly be humorous.  With the element of time travel and alternate timelines figuring prominently in the sequel, having the cast of both the original trilogy and the current one, makes this film one to look forward to.

With Stewart, McKellen and possibly Jackman on board, who else would you like to see return in their X-Men uniform? Cyclops? Storm? Ice Man? Jean Grey? Let me know in the comments below.
