Zachary Quinto stars as the lead, Charlie Manx, a vampire who maintains his youth by draining the life force of children, whom he transports to a fantasy world known as Christmasland. As Quinto describes:
“In the journey, they become these ghoulish creatures, and Charlie Manx is fed with vitality and youth.”
The show’s protagonist, a high school senior Vic McQueen, played by Ashleigh Cummings, finds herself somehow psychically attuned to Manx, a connection that Manx becomes aware of, making Vic his prime target. As showrunner Jami O’Brien says:
“She’s a working-class kid who has such a creative mind that it actually gives her a kind of superpower. Charlie Manx becomes aware of her and realizes that she may be bad news for him, so he has to figure out pretty quickly what to do about her.”
The trailer shows the words “The Wraith” spelled out in Scrabble tiles. The character Maggie Leigh, a librarian, played by Jahkara Smith, is a psychic who uses Scrabble tiles to locate missing items. The Wraith is Manx’s car, which can travel through time and into different dimensions… such as Christmasland. The car– 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith– gives the series its name, as its license plate reads “NOS4A2.”
O’Brien explains:
“The car has a very special relationship with Charlie Manx. I would describe them as partners in crime.”
But also shown in the trailer is the flickering image of a covered bridge. Called the Shorter Way Bridge, this structure is used by Vic to travel anywhere she desires.
‘NOS4A2’ is based on the novel of the same name, written by Joe Hill, which was published in 2013. The biggest alteration to the book is the depiction of Charlie Manx, who is not young and attractive like Quinto. In the novel, he resembles the decrepit Count Orlok from the 1922 silent film ‘Nosferatu’.
‘NOS4A2’, based on Joe Hill’s bestselling novel of the same name, tells the story of Charlie Manx, a seductive immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland – an icy, twisted Christmas village of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Manx finds his whole world threatened when a young woman in New England discovers she has a dangerous gift.
Ashleigh Cummings will play Vic McQueen, a young, working-class artist whose creativity awakens a supernatural ability to track Manx (Zachary Quinto). What Vic lacks in social confidence, she makes up for in courage, humor, and tough-as-nails grit. She strives to defeat Manx and rescue his victims without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.
AMC has not yet scheduled a premiere date, but ‘Nos4a2’ is expected to arrive this summer.
