Captain Marvel

A new trailer for ‘Captain Marvel’ that reveals almost all new footage has been released.  The film conveys the action of the film but also taps a bit into the feminist vibe of its mid-90s setting.  Before The Spice Girls made “Girl Power” an enduring catchphrase with the bubblegum pop style, women celebrated females in rock with Lilith Fair and the “Riot Grrrls” movement.  This trailer is set to the single “Connection” by Elastica, an example of the latter.  This song selection works double duty, both capturing the’90s setting and celebrating the fact that this is the first Marvel Studios movie with a solo female headliner.

The new trailer also has a lighter tone, establishing that ‘Captain Marvel’ isn’t all fisticuffs and that like all Marvel movies, there is a healthy dose of humor as well.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has stated that he and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck looked toward ’90s action movies to help influence this film, in much the same way as ’70s conspiracy flicks inspired ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.  It’s unclear what action movies he was referring to, and it will probably remain unclear until ‘Captain Marvel’ is released.  But is it possible that this movie is like ‘Speed’ meets ‘Independence Day’ with a dash of ‘The Matrix’?  That works about as well as any other analogy.  As long as there’s no inspiration from ‘Batman & Robin’, we’ll be fine.

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

‘Captain Marvel’ stars Brie Larson, Annette Bening, Gemma Chan, Clark Gregg, Djimon Hounsou, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, Ben Mendelsohn, and Lee Pace, and swoops into theaters March 8, 2019.
