There is a rumor circling that a ‘Starship Troopers‘ television show is currently in production. The fun part of this rumor though is that the upcoming series wouldn’t be a reboot of the franchise but would include the cast from the original 1997 movie! We first heard that Sony was looking into rebooting the ‘Starship Troopers’ franchise two years back and it sounds as if this new series would be developed to continue the films while the movie reboot could still be in production.
The news came from Ed Neumeier who has been making the rounds lately due to his involvement with ‘Robocop Returns.’ Neumeier had penned the original film as well as was involved with ‘Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation’, ‘Starship Troopers 3: Marauder’, and ‘Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars.’
The question he was asked is if it would be impossible or not to deliver a sequel to a 30-year-old movie:
“Well, I think they can. I don’t want to jinx anything, but we are talking about trying to do a television show that is based on that idea.”
As to the movie reboot? Neumeier has “mixed feelings” about the idea and goes into detail as to why:
“Well, I have mixed feelings about it [the reboot] because I think that what we did with the first Starship is almost not repeatable in a way. I based the structure of Starship Troopers when I was writing it, the structure of WWII propaganda films that the studios made between 1941 and 1944. We don’t really talk about those movies anymore, but that had a very particular structure, and they were made during a conflict, and they didn’t have an end-point as with Starship ends they’ll keep fighting.”
I would personally be thrilled to see ‘Starship Troopers’ return and feel that if done in a style that was complementary to the original films and continued in the neverending war against the bugs that it could still resonate with audiences. Even with those who hadn’t seen any of the previous movies if it is done correctly.
