This fall’s installment of the anthology series ‘American Horror Story’ will be entitled ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ and will focus on Jessica Lange‘s character, a German ex-patriot who runs one of the last carnival sideshows in the US in the early 1950s, during the early days of the Cold War.  Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy and several other ‘AHS’ alums are due to return to the series in undisclosed roles.

Also returning is Sarah Paulson, who appeared at an ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ screening and Q&A.  When questioned about ‘Freak Show’ she couldn’t reveal much, but did answer a few questions.

While Paulson couldn’t say much about the upcoming season, she has read the first script and her reaction was simply, “Holy s**t!”  She added, “I feel like that’s the appropriate reaction you want when you read the first script of ‘American Horror Story.’  So it’s very exciting and totally nerve-wracking in the best way because you think, ‘How the hell am I going to pull this off?!’ And as an actor, I think that’s an exciting thing to feel.”

Discussing the overall tone of the new season, she described it as “a kind of beautiful hybrid between ‘Coven’ and ‘Asylum:’

“There’s going to be a little bit of a richer and potentially darker tone the way ‘Asylum’ had, but with the humor infused from ‘Coven.’  When you add Kathy Bates to the story, she’s so funny, and Emma Roberts was so funny last year as Madison, I just think it’s going to be a really beautiful mix of both.”

When asked about working with executive producer Ryan Murphy, she stated, “His interests tend to go towards the female and the intricacies of the female heart and mind and I love him so much for that because, boy, he has thrown the ball at me in a really beautiful way.  I worship at the altar of Ryan Murphy and I always will.”

Paulson didn’t spill many details about her role this season, but did say “It’s requiring a lot of physical things.”

With a concept as outlandish as ‘Freak Show’ there’s no telling where Murphy will steer this season, but the ratings on this series keep getting better with each season.  This one should be the biggest yet!
