Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown took home the Best Performance award for ‘Stranger Things 2’ at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. While she accepted her award, Brown took the opportunity to address the issue of bullying via video as she had split her kneecap and was unable to attend the ceremony in person.

Brown said:

“Since I know there are many young people watching this, and even to the adults — they could probably use the reminder, too — I was taught, if you don’t have anything nice to say, just don’t say it. There should be no space in this world for bullying, and I’m not going to tolerate it and neither should any you. If you need a reminder of how well you are and to rise above the hate, message me on Instagram.”

Brown’s emotional speech comes on the heels of the actress quitting Twitter after users had started to make her the subject of several homophobic memes. The memes in question led to hateful comments toward her and were often shared using the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown. Brown has kept her other verified account, @Milliestopshate, though it hasn’t been updated since December.

In her acceptance video, Brown addressed her fans and spoke about how getting the role of Eleven has changed her life, saying:

“To all my fans, I really wish I could be there with you all to receive this award, but sadly, I’m stuck here in Atlanta recovering from a small injury and I’m following the doctor’s orders to rest. I want you to know how grateful I am to those who support me. It’s no secret that landing the role of Eleven in ‘Stranger Things’ has changed my life in the most incredible ways. It’s afforded me the chance to work with remarkable people, especially the Duffers, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Iain Patterson, and Netflix, and all of the cast members.”

‘Stranger Things’ also took home Best Show, Noah Schnapp won Most Frightened Performance for his portrayal of Will Byers, and Brown and her co-star Finn Wolfhard won the award for Best Musical Moment for their dance to “Every Breath You Take.”
