All eyes are on ‘Avengers: Endgame’ which opens in April and caps off the grand Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has generated 22 interlocking movies over the span of 10 years. While what comes beyond that is mostly mysterious, one project that is known to be in the works is a solo film featuring Scarlett Johansson‘s ‘Black Widow’. And now it seems that this picture will be released early next year, as it is reported that filming will begin on February 28. Reinforcing the possibility of this start date is the fact that Johansson doesn’t have any other projects lined up.
Australian Cate Shortland is directing, based on a screenplay by Jac Schaeffer. So far, Johansson is the only known cast member. Filming is expected to take place in Croatia and Miami, Florida and the plot is said to further embellish the character’s origin, growing up in the Soviet “Red Room.” Production is expected to run into March and should ‘Black Widow’ follow the schedule of other Marvel movies, it will likely require almost a year of post-production. (Possibly less, since Black Widow is not likely to be going into space or another dimension in her solo adventure.)
Johansson debuted as secret agent Natasha Romanoff in 2010’s ‘Iron Man 2’, and has appeared in five subsequent movies, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, with ‘Endgame’ marking her sixth performance in the role.
In that time, Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp co-headlined last year’s ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Captain Marvel’, featuring Brie Larson in the title role arrives in theaters in March, marking the first solo female Marvel Studio’s film. Black Widow was the first female Marvel superhero in the film universe, so her first solo outing is long overdue.
