There have been a slew of rumors concerning the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe popping up and the latest one on the ‘Black Widow‘ movie is that it could be the first R-Rated Marvel Studios film to be released. While ‘Captain Marvel’ will be the first female-lead superhero in the MCU, Scarlet Johansson’s character is The Avenger who many have felt should have her own for quite some time. We’ve seen plenty of spycraft in Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ but not too much from Natasha Romanoff yet who is prime for giving us a spy film.

We know that Cate Shortland has slated to direct the movie which is likely to be released in 2020 or 2021 and now a harder take on the character could come about. Rumors have been flying that this would give us an origin story of the character and if that ends up being the case, an R-Rating would be rather fitting. We’ve seen hints at Romanoff’s history before working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers, but this would shine a spotlight on her time working for the Red Room.

The first time word of this film came up was in 2017, and the same source is now sharing that at the time it was mentioned to R-Rated. It isn’t clear if that is still the plan but with the Fox buyout happening and at least ‘Deadpool’ being continued that could give a reason for aspects of the MCU to cater to a more adult audience.
