Fans of the original ‘Roswell’ series know that the aliens replenished their strength by drinking Tabasco sauce. It looks like The CW’s reboot series, ‘Roswell, New Mexico,’ is changing things up by having the extraterrestrials drink nail polish remover!

You may be wondering, “why the change?” ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ creator Carina Adly MacKenzie explained:

“We weren’t allowed to use hot sauce. We have the rights to the books, but we don’t have the rights to the original TV show, so anything that we do that references the original show in that way is a homage; it’s a treat for fans!”

So, faced with the task of coming up with a new power drink for the aliens, MacKenzie used her environment for inspiration. She said:

“I was like, ‘What’s the weirdest thing that’s readily available and I could imagine people drinking?’ I literally looked around my room and saw nail polish remover and was like, ‘That’s it!’ We have so many bottles of nail polish remover all around our set, we keep saying we should really get a sponsorship, but then also it would be like, ‘Don’t drink it, kids!’”

Fear not, condiment lovers! Just like the original series, the reboot will feature a scene in which ketchup is used as a diversion tactic. Jeanine Mason who plays Liz had some trouble filming while covered in ketchup. She said:

“It created a gag reflex for me for a while. I’m kind of over it now…but not really! It was so much ketchup!”

Mason spoke about having to put on her ketchup-soaked costume a week after filming one scene, saying:

“I went to put it on and when they pulled it out of the garment bag and it reeked! We put it on me and went upstairs and the crew and Carina were like, ‘No! We can’t deal with the stink. You’re not going to wear a uniform in the scene!’”

Don’t miss ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
