Stand-up comedian and actor Ali Wong has reportedly been added to the cast of ‘Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ as someone who works for or as a part of the Gotham City Police Department.  That would make her a coworker of Rosie Perez‘s Renee Montoya who is traditionally depicted as a detective, but may be slightly recast as a forensic scientist or something along those lines.  (This is based on conflicting reports.)  Character actor Robert Catrini (‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’) has been cast in an undisclosed role.  (But judging by the look of him, he wouldn’t make a bad Commissioner Gordon, if JK Simmons is really finished with the role.)

This news comes shortly after the revelation that Chris Messina (‘Sharp Objects’) has been cast as the villain Victor Zsasz.

Margot Robbie will executive produce and return to star as Harley Quinn, her breakout ‘Suicide Squad’ role.  ‘Birds of Prey’ also features Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress, with Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, alias Roman Sionis.  Black Mask is expected to be the main villain of the film, so Victor Zsasz has a smaller role of some sort.

‘Birds of Prey’ will be directed by Cathy Yan, with a script by Christina Hodson.

Wong has starred in her own standup specials which can be found on Netflix, ‘Ali Wong: Baby Cobra’ and ‘Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife’.  She is a regular contributor to various comedy programs like ‘Chelsea Lately’, ‘Best Week Ever’, ‘Hey Girl’ and ‘The History of Comedy’.  She voiced the character Felony in ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ and is a regular cast member of the ABC sitcom ‘American Housewife’.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is expected to begin production in January to be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
