Spider-Women

Spider-Gwen was introduced in Marvel Comics in 2014 and in the few years since has become one of Marvel’s most popular characters.  She will web her way onto the big screen in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ but that’s just step one for this character.  Sony has announced that this version of Gwen Stacy, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, will swing back in another animated movie, entitled ‘Spider-Women’.  Joaquim Dos Santos (‘Justice League Unlimited’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’) is directing, with Amy Pascal producing.  Avi Arad, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller are expected to be involved in some capacity.  Bek Smith (‘Zoo’) is writing the screenplay.

Spider-Gwen is the Gwen Stacy from the parallel universe of Earth-65, who gained powers instead of Peter Parker.  She currently headlines the ‘Marvel Rising’ initiative, which includes dolls and a cartoon series, in which Dove Cameron voices her.  On ‘Marvel Rising’, she goes by the code name Ghost-Spider.

Reportedly, ‘Spider-Women’ “will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers.”  Other than Spider-Gwen, it’s unclear who these other ‘Spider-Women’ will be.  The first and most popular Spider-Woman is Jessica Drew, a character that has no connection to Peter Parker, other than serving alongside him in the Avengers.  Jessica Drew can cling to walls, fly, has super strength, can influence others with her pheromones and fire electric “Venom Blasts.”

She was temporarily replaced by Julia Carpenter, who could also cling to walls and possessed super strength but could also generate webs of psychic energy.  She served as part of the team Force Works and had a brief romance with Tony Stark/Iron Man.  Julia now goes by the name Arachne.

Anya Corazon has operated as both Araña and Spider-Girl.  Her powers have fluctuated over the years, but she mainly possesses powers similar to Spider-Man’s but at one point, she had an energy exoskeleton that worked as a force field.

There have been persistent rumors that Sony has been working on a film starring Silk, a.k.a. Cindy Moon, a classmate of Peter Parker’s who was also bitten by a radioactive spider on the same field trip but who developed different powers, including the ability to weave webs.  In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, Tiffany Espensen portrayed a character named simply “Cindy” but there has been talk that she would become Silk.  But perhaps animation is a better option for introducing this character.

It’s not yet known when Sony’s ‘Spider-Women’ will be released.  Until that time, Spider-Gwen will appear in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ which opens in theaters on December 14, 2018.
