Steven Spielberg has had an amazing career over the years, but even he isn’t a fan of everything that he’s released. Notoriously, the director wasn’t thrilled with his work on ‘Hook,’ but now he admits he didn’t love how ‘War of the Worlds‘ had turned out either. The film is usually positively received and was a welcome addition to the science fiction action films which Tom Cruise has starred in, but there is one main section which didn’t work for the famed director.
The ending.
According to the famed director, the film “doesn’t have a good ending” because he “never could figure out how to end that darn thing.” Because of this, the final scene fades to black rather abruptly.
His complaint about the end has to do with how humanity defeated these alien invaders by just having them exposed to our air. He felt it was a weak ending as well:
“I don’t think H. G. Wells could figure it out. The common cold takes out the bad guys.”
It does seem like a ridiculous ending to have space-faring aliens with advanced technology ending up invading a world which they couldn’t even survive on in the first place. We’ve seen the same premise play out in M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Signs’ and is an issue which still plagued Spielberg at the end of ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’
Do you agree with Steven Spielberg that the ending to ‘War of the Worlds’ was weak? Can you think of a way to end the film which would have worked better? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
