Virginia Madsen Swamp Thing Maria Sunderland

While Virginia Madsen (‘Sideways,’ ‘Designated Survivor’) hasn’t been doing much genre work lately that is going to be changing as she was just cast as Maria Sunderland in the DC Universe adaptation of ‘Swamp Thing.’ This might be seen as a return to form for the actress by some her fondly remember her in 1984’s ‘Dune‘ and 1992’s ‘Candyman.’ She hasn’t strayed too far from horror over the years as she was featured in ‘The Haunting in Connecticut’ and even did voicework in Netflix’s recent ‘Voltron’ series.

Virginia will have a crucial role in the series as Maris is described as having “traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland, but Avery’s lifetime obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp.” The actor to play her husband Avery has yet to be cast at this time.

Abby is portrayed on the upcoming series by Crystal Reed and is the key character of the show. ‘Swamp Thing’ will follow Abby “as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.”

It is clear these two will be crossing paths throughout the show.
