Frank Grillo

We know that Chris Evans has insisted that he’s done playing Captain America after ‘Avengers 4‘ but won’t let on if the character ends up dead or not. Either way, Steve Rogers likely won’t be the one to wield the shield going forward, and that leaves us to wonder who could take on the role. Frank Grillo, however, has heard rumors concerning a changeup.

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all follows the footprints laid out by Marvel Comics, we would likely see Sebastian Stan‘s Bucky or Anthony Mackie‘s Falcon take over. We know that Stan has a ton of films left in his contract and that alone would make him the most obvious choice. However, Grillo’s new insight might change that up a bit.

The actor, who plays Crossbones, was asked on Larry King if he knew which actor might take over the job once Evans bows out. While he doesn’t know who will end up as the next Cap, the actor has heard some rumblings as to what type of person Marvel Studios is looking for:

When the actor asked if he knew who the next Captain America would be, he responded:

“I don’t know. I don’t know, but there have been rumors that Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they’re looking.”

Based on the source material this would seem that Mackie would now be the lead contender to take the part. That being said, iterations of both Peggy Carter and Shannon Carter have worn the mantle as well. We’ll all be dying to see how Evans character departs after ‘Avengers 4’ and see if the door is left open for his return.

Who do you think will be the next Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is there any chance that they’ll leave the door open for Evans to return down the line? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
