johnny depp crimes of grindelwald

If you were wondering what was up with Grindelwald’s eye in all of the promo material for ‘Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald,‘ it turns out that it was all Johnny Depp‘s idea. We know a fair amount about the villain who is the second most powerful dark wizard which J.K. Rowling has presented us to date, and this eye choice was a bit of a surprise to fans. We know that his character will be more important in the upcoming sequel and it seems that Depp had some say on him as well. It is safe to say that Rowling and director David Yates liked the idea enough to sign off on the look. It presents an interesting take on the villain which he’s playing that should likely leave most fans satisfied when we see him in action in the upcoming movie.

According to Depp:

“It’s a character choice. I saw Grindelwald as more than one if you know what I mean. I almost felt like he’s maybe two people. He’s twins in one body. So a gamey eye is more like the other side of him. Sort of like a brain for each eye, an albino twin, and he’s somewhere in the middle.”

Depp went on to describe the character as being almost childlike and is both dangerous and oddly likable. These two halves are likely what he means to have visually reflected in his eyes. Complex villains are often the best ones, and anyone who can portray someone that you both want to hate and want to be around is someone that you usually can’t take your eyes off of.

We know that there will be ties to Harry Potter in the film as well which has you wondering if it could be related to Dumbledore or perhaps something Grindelwald does in the film.
