Venom

Venom‘ has been making a surprising killing at the box office and isn’t quite the “turd in the wind” that one might have expected, but a good portion of the film was almost entirely different. Specifically, the introduction to the movie would have been a much longer sequence. While things start with the Life Foundation commissioned mission returning to Earth with symbiotes to examine and there was plenty of talk about their homeworld Klyntar, we almost ended up seeing it! Yes, folks, a planet covered in gooey symbiotes almost made its way onto the big screen.

As director Ruben Fleischer shared in a recent interview:

“The beginning of the movie was a hard one. Like, how much do we want to tell the backstory? There was a version [of the opening] where there was a planet crawling with tons of symbiotes that were collected and taken back to Earth by the Life Foundation. They had encountered them. But it kind of felt like, my instinct was it would be better to keep it more mysterious and just know that they’ve retrieved something from space. We don’t know exactly by what means or how. Jenny [Slate]’s character later says they encountered it on a comet that was passing, and they retrieved these samples and brought it back to Earth. But yeah, I thought it was better just leave it a little bit mysterious, the backstory of the aliens.”

As fun as seeing this world could have been, it would have been a bit convoluted as the onset of the movie and likely would have taken audiences out of the action as the story shoehorned this entire area in. Producer Matt Tolmach actually hinted that it could still be seen in a follow-up film if another is made as:

“We toyed with some artwork that we loved. … We toyed with it. But we wanted the movie — it’s out there. It’s part of our mythology. It’s part of our backstory, Klyntar and where this all came from and who knows what’s next. But, it made sense to, in this movie, to let the origin of those things kind of unravel in the storytelling is as opposed to going [to that planet].”

We’ll likely see a sequel if the movie has the momentum to top the box office for a second week and while that will probably give us a focus on what is set up in the credits scene, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this story arc visited as well.

Are you happy with the introduction which ‘Venom’ had or would you have preferred to see Klyntar covered in symbiotes? Do you think that they’ll show us the planet in a future film? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
