“Everyday feels like Halloween” in Greendale, according to the voice over in Netflix’s latest trailer for ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’. The voice-over is provided by the title character, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), who is about to turn 16 and in doing so, must decide whether she wants to embrace her humanity or to follow the path of darkness and become a witch. Talk about growing pains!
Created by showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also created and produces ‘Riverdale’, this show is steeped in horror conventions– there is a very overt reference to ‘Night of the Living Dead’– but there is still some of that campy humor that makes ‘Riverdale’ such a delightfully guilty pleasure. ‘Sabrina’ benefits from its excellent adult cast which includes Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda, Miranda Otto as Aunt Zelda and ‘Doctor Who”s Michelle Gomez as high school teacher Mary Wardell, all of whom could go toe-to-toe– or barb-to-barb– with the likes of Mädchen Amick or Marisol Nichols.
But unlike passive-aggressive Mean Girl Cheryl Blossom, the Queen Bees of ‘Sabrina’ are literal witches– played by Abigail F. Cowen, Tati Gabrielle, and Adeline Rudolph– so expect them to deliver more than snarky put-downs and pop culture references. But speaking of pop culture references, the trailer contains a fitting homage to ‘The Craft’, the original teen witch camp-fest.
What else can we expect from ‘Chilling Adventures if Sabrina’? Check out the new trailer below to find out:
‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ also stars Richard Coyle, Ross Lynch, Chance Perdomo, Bronson Pinchot, Jaz Sinclair, and Lachlan Watson.
The first season consists of ten episodes which arrive just in time for a Halloween binge on October 26. Netflix had so much faith in this project that they ordered a second season right off the bat. (Ouch, poor choice of words.) Expect those episodes to arrive around the same time next year.
