HBO’s upcoming ‘Watchmen’ series is going to rock… well at least in one way. Nine Inch Nails rockers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will help score the series. This marks the first time the duo have contributed original music to a scripted TV show, but they previously won an Academy Award for their score for ‘The Social Network’. (Who knew Trent Reznor had an Oscar?) The pair has also been recognized for their scores for ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘Patriots Day’ as well as the PBS documentary series ‘The Vietnam War’. In addition, Nine Inch Nails songs have been included in countless TV episodes and movies, particularly “Closer” and “Hurt.”
Created by Damon Lindelof (‘The Leftovers’, ‘Lost’), ‘Watchmen’ is based on the DC Comics graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, originally published 1986. In 2009, a film adaptation, directed by Zack Snyder was released. Lindelof’s HBO series appears to be set during a time following the events of the comic and movie, in which the world has narrowly avoided a global nuclear apocalypse.
Recently, Gibbons vaguely discussed the script for the new series, saying:
“I do know a little about it. I’ve had conversations with Damon, and I’ve read the screenplay for the pilot. I don’t think it’s my place to say too much about it, other than I found Damon’s approach to be really refreshing and exciting and unexpected. I don’t think it’s gonna be what people think it’s going to be. It certainly wasn’t what I imagined it to be. I think it’s extremely fresh. I’m really looking forward to seeing it on the screen.”
Reportedly, Regina King portrays the focal character of ‘Watchmen’. That cast also includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Frances Fisher, Louis Gossett Jr., Andrew Howard, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jacob Ming-Trent, Tom Mison, Tim Blake Nelson, Dylan Schombing, and Sara Vickers.
Hopes are high for this series, which HBO is hoping will be their next ‘Game of Thrones’. Speaking of which, Ramin Djawadi just won an Emmy Award for his score for ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Seven, but no pressure, Trent and Atticus!
‘Watchmen’ is expected to premiere at an undisclosed time in 2019.
