There has been a lot of mystery around HBO’s upcoming take on ‘Watchmen‘ as to what direction they are planning to take the series. This shouldn’t be that much of a surprise as the series is being brought to us by Damon Lindelof who gave us ‘Lost.’ Fans of the graphic novel had better temper their expectations though as while it sounds like we’re getting a take on the source material that is true to the themes, it is going to be something different that hits the small screen.

However, the reasoning behind Lindelof’s changes makes sense and you can feel the passion that he has for the project when he is trying to communicate the changes to his fellow fans of Alan Moore’s work.

Not only will the story be more contemporary but Lindelof is creating new characters for the story as well!

The full five pages are pretty in-depth and it is obvious he has put a lot of thought into this as you can check out in his own words right here:

One of the key takeaways which I don’t think anyone was expecting is that we won’t be seeing the story of ‘Watchmen’ here. In fact, the story is going to be taking place after the events of the comics. Fans who are hoping that Adrian Veidt or some of the other surviving characters from Moore’s work may show up are going to be disappointed as “we are not making a “sequel” either. This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built…but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary.”

While it sounds like the original heroes aren’t going to show up there is a plan for “a surprising, yet familiar set of eyes” who will watch these new heroes and villains.

Do you agree with how Damon Lindelof is planning on adapting ‘Watchman’ for HBO? Would you prefer a pure adaptation of the story or is a modernized take the way to go? Who do you think will be watching over these new characters? Share your thoughts below!
