Regina King watchmen

We knew that HBO’s ‘Watchmen‘ was coming together quite quickly under director Damon Lindelof‘s guiding hand but now it seems that the majority, if not the entire cast has already been signed! There is some real star power attached here, and while we don’t know who everyone will be playing quite yet, it looks like we’ll be in for a real treat from the quality of acting.

Of course, with the show set after the events of the comics or movie, it isn’t even entirely clear as to what the story will be about yet.

What we have learned though is that Regina King (‘American Crime,’ ‘The Leftovers) will be the lead on the show and Lindelof has cast a few other big names to join her including Don Johnson (‘Miami Vice’), Tim Blake Nelson (‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’), Louis Gossett Jr. (‘An Officer and a Gentleman’), Adelaide Clemens (‘Rectify’), and Andrew Howard (‘Hatfields & McCoys’).

All we know is that the series will be contemporary and likely not feature any of the original heroes, though it is being narrated by a “familiar face” so anything could be possible if the show is successful.

The way he described the difference between the graphic novel or movie and this series is that:

“Those original 12 issues [of Watchmen] are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen,” Lindelof wrote this week. “The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica. To be clear. Watchmen is canon. … We are not making a ‘sequel’ either. This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built. … But in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. … Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them.”<

I think it could be a smart idea to avoid retelling the same tale that we’ve already been given just in a new context. However, we’ll see what the future holds for the series when the first trailer does end up being released.
