Netflix has announced when the first season of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ will be available and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The supernatural Archie Comics thriller will be released on Friday, October 26, the Friday before Halloween, which falls on the following Wednesday. That gives viewers six days to binge all ten episodes before waiting for the second season, which will also consist of ten episodes. Netflix ordered two seasons right off the bat in December after another Archie Comics-based series ‘Riverdale’ had performed extremely well for the streaming service when it became available last summer.
Like ‘Riverdale’, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ is a dark spin on the classically comedic characters. This darker approach has been compared to ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Exorcist’. ‘Mad Men’ alum Kiernan Shipka will portray the titular teenage witch, Sabrina Spellman, while Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis play her aunts, fellow witches Zelda and Hilda. Newcomer Chance Perdomo will appear as Sabrina’s cousin Ambrose, a necromancer, while Ross Lynch plays her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle, who will be revealed as the latest in a long line of witch hunters. Bronson Pinchot has a recurring role as her tyrannical human principal, George Hawthorne, while Richard Coyle plays a sinister head warlock, Father Blackwood. Jaz Sinclair portrays Sabrina’s human best friend Rosalind Walker, while Lachlan Watson plays another human friend, Susie Putnam. But in the realm of witches, Sabrina will be tormented by the “Weird Sisters,” a trio of mean girls based on the witches from ‘Macbeth’– Tati Gabrielle (Prudence), Abigail F. Cowen (Dorcas) and Adeline Rudolph (Agatha). Gavin Leatherwood appears as another warlock, Nicholas Scratch, while ‘Doctor Who”s Michelle Gomez plays Sabrina’s favorite teacher, Mary Wardell, who falls under an evil influence.
Before ‘Sabrina’ was picked up by Netflix, plans were underway to pitch it as a direct spin-off of ‘Riverdale’ for The CW, with seeds planted in the second season of that series– including the mentions of the dark and mysterious neighboring town of Greendale. While Sabrina and her classmates will live in Greendale and attend Baxter High, with the show now being offered on Netflix, there are no plans for ‘Sabrina’ to cross over with ‘Riverdale’.
Once again, the first season of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ will be available on Friday, October 26.
