Angela Bassett

In May, after the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, the directors Joe and Anthony Russo went on the record to discuss what other Marvel movie characters did or didn’t turn to ash after Thanos’ Infinity finger snap, but in a few cases, they dodged the inquiries by saying it would be a “spoiler” to reveal what had happened.  One of these “spoilers” came up when they were asked about Shuri (Letitia Wright), Black Panther’s sister.

But Angela Bassett who starred as Queen Ramonda in ‘Black Panther’ is certain that two-thirds of the royal family are intact.  While she didn’t reveal much, she did state:

“No. Neither did my daughter. Shuri, she’s a bright girl there in Wakanda. So…’

There have been rumors that Shuri will assume the identity of Black Panther since at this point Wakanda is without a king.  Ramonda did not appear in ‘Infinity War’, but Shuri did, as she tried to dislodge the Mind Stone from the Vision’s head.  But her fate after that was not shown.

Beyond the rumor that she might become Black Panther, it is still believed that Shuri will play a major role in the next movie, as her technical genius will likely help the other heroes in their quest to reclaim their fallen comrades.

Obviously ‘Avengers 4’ will begin with a much smaller cast, but as large as this overall story is, it’s hard to speculate how each franchise might factor in.  It’s possible we’ll have to wait until ‘Black Panther 2’ to find out exactly what has happened in Wakanda (and elsewhere) following ‘Infinity War’.

‘Avengers 4’ will open on May 3, 2019, but so far almost nothing is known about it, including what characters from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe will appear.  A ‘Black Panther’ sequel is expected with Ryan Coogler returning to direct, but so far neither a production nor release date has been announced.

Angela Bassett appears in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ opening this weekend.
