Wu Assassins

Netflix has ordered a new fantasy martial arts series entitled ‘We Assassins’ from John Wirth (‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’, ‘Falling Skies’), who will write and serve as showrunner.  He is joined by Tony Krantz of Flame Ventures (’24’) and Nomadic Pictures (‘Fargo’, ‘Hell on Wheels’).  Hong Kong film director Stephen Fung, who also helmed episodes of the AMC series ‘Into the Badlands’, will direct the first two episodes of ‘Wu Assassins’ which will consist of ten episodes in its first season.  Krantz is also expected to direct the series.

The show will star Iko Uwais, who will also serve as producer, lead martial arts and fight choreographer and stunt coordinator.  Uwais is best known for ‘The Raid: Redemption’ and ‘The Raid 2’, on which he also served as action and fight choreographer.  He may also be recognized from an appearance in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in which he appeared as Razoo Quin-Fee.  He co-stars in Peter Berg’s ‘Mile 22’ with Mark Wahlberg which will be released next month.  He is currently filming ‘Stuber’, an action comedy co-starring Dave Bautista, Betty Gilpin, and Kumail Najiani.

On ‘Wu Assassins’, Uwais plays the series’ lead Kai Jin.  Here is the description of the series:

WU ASSASSINS is an action-packed crime drama set In San Francisco’s Chinatown. The series stars Iko Uwais as Kai Jin, an aspiring chef who becomes the latest and last Wu Assassin, chosen to round up the powers of an ancient triad and restore balance once again.

Byron Mann co-stars as Uncle Six.  Mann may be best known for ‘The Expanse’ on which he portrays Admiral Nguyen or Netflix’s hit ‘Altered Carbon’ in which he portrayed O.G. Kovacs for three episodes.  He also had a recurring role on ‘Arrow’ as Yao Fei Gulong and on Canadian series ‘Blood and Water’ as Evan Ong.  He starred on ‘Hell On Wheels’ which was executive produced by Wirth and came from Nomadic Pictures.

Mann will also be seen on July 13, in the Dwayne Johnson action thriller ‘Skyscraper’ and Blumhouse’s upcoming horror movie ‘Only You’.

‘Wu Assassins’ is the second series by Nomadic Pictures ordered by Netflix.  The streaming service also recently picked up supernatural drama ‘The Order’.
