Gemma Chan Captain Marvel

‘Captain Marvel’ appears to be getting close to wrapping, and for one cast member, this wild Marvel ride is over– Gemma Chan, who plays the character Doctor Minerva, also known as the Kree spy Minn-Erva.  Her character is a scientist and geneticist in the original comics and she is likely to play a major role in the film, as human Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) finds her DNA spliced with that of the Kree, resulting in her gaining incredible superpowers.

To mark the end of her role in ‘Captain Marvel’, Chan posted a picture from the set via Twitter.  Alas, she does not reveal her costume, but she does have an edgy haircut at least.

In the comics, the Kree have blue skin, but then again, so does the Grandmaster.  But in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, Jeff Goldblum only sported a small blue stripe on his chin.  Also, keep in mind that the Kree characters are all spies on Earth and they wouldn’t be very effective at blending in if they looked like large Smurfs.  Then again, Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser does have blue skin and he will be returning for ‘Captain Marvel’.  Either way, if Minerva and her fellow Kree Yon-Rog (Ben Mendelsohn) and Mar-Vell (Jude Law) do actually have blue skin, they will have some way to disguise that while on Earth.

As a side note, speaking of Ronan, in the comics, Minerva and Ronan have worked together, so perhaps that’s a relationship that we will see mirrored on the big screen.

‘Captain Marvel’ is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.  In addition to Chan, Larson, Law, Mendelsohn and Pace, the cast includes Annette Bening, Colin Ford (Steve Danvers), Mckenna Grace, Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Djimon Hounsou (Korath the Pursuer), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Robert Kazinsky, Lashana Lynch, Kenneth Mitchell (Joseph Danvers), Pete Ploszek and Vik Sahay.  Some roles are still under wraps.  In fact, Mendelsohn’s character, though widely believed to be Yon-Rog, has not been officially confirmed.  Bening’s role is believed to be Carol’s mother, while Grace is believed to be playing a young version of Carol herself.  Lashana Lynch is believed to be playing a version of Monica Rambeau, another Marvel character that operated under the name Captain Marvel during the ’80s and ’90s.

‘Captain Marvel’ will invade theaters on March 8, 2019.
