As shown in the Season Three finale of ‘Supergirl’, Mon-El (Chris Wood) wound up leaving and going back to his home in the future. Expect that to be a one-way trip, at least for the time being. Chris Wood who has been a series regular for two years, will not return for the upcoming fourth season.
Executive producer Robert Rovner explained:
“The plan for Chris was always to have him on the show for two years. We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”
Fellow EP Jessica Queller added:
“They both have destinies in different times as heroes. What they did was the sort-of Casablanca decision of putting what’s most important to them — which is saving the world — first. It’s a little bittersweet that one destiny is to be a hero in this time and one’s destiny is to run the Legion in another time, but I think they grew a lot from knowing one another. They have respect for one another, and they have a respect for the decisions they respectively made.”
Mon-El appeared to sacrifice himself at the end of Season Two, getting sucked into a wormhole. He emerged in the 31st century where he founded the Legion of Superheroes. In the finale, Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath) chose to remain in the past because one of his ancestors would destroy all other AIs. To replace him, Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) journeyed to the 31st century in his place. As was previously announced, Rath is being bumped up to series regular next season, while Jordan becomes a recurring guest.
But the door is always open for a potential return appearance. As Rovner said, “We love working with Chris, so we’d love to have Mon-El back someday if the story takes us there and if Chris is available.”
Are you sad to see Mon-El go? Or was this move overdue?
