Jordan Peele Gargoyles

Disney fans may remember the Walt Disney Television animated series ‘Gargoyles’ produced in the 90s. The show centered around a group of creatures that were turned to stone during the day but protected New York City by night. The series covered darker storylines than most animated shows at that time and gained a cult following. Fans have been begging for a movie for years, and now one of Hollywood’s hottest directors has come forward about his desire to do just that.

Rumor has it that Jordan Peele, who won an Oscar for writing ‘Get Out,’ pitched a new movie take on the animated series to Disney.

In a recent edition of the entertainment industry newsletter ‘The Ankler,’ writer Richard Rushfield reports that Peele “walk[ed] in and says he wants to do a new version of ‘Gargoyles.’” Disney apparently is not rushing to make a decision. Rushfield wrote:

“How do you turn down Jordan Peele? Well, you can’t. Who wants to be responsible for that decision? So in the absence of a good reason to say no, but prevented by their Big IP box from saying yes, Disney is slow walking the decision. It’s hoping, it seems, that they’ll run out the clock, he’ll sign other deals elsewhere, and the project will just fade away.”

Rushfield goes on to suggest that Peele’s take on ‘Gargoyles’ may not fit in with Disney’s lineup, and the studio may see the new project as a risk it is not willing to take. Instead of turning it down, Rushfield thinks they’ll just wait Peele out until he eventually moves on to something else.
