andy serkis snoke

One of the most frustrating aspects of the new “Star Wars” movies is that outside of the Lucasfilm writing group we know next to nothing about Supreme Leader Snoke. Well, that isn’t entirely true as we’ve just discovered that Andy Serkis has a lot of inside knowledge about the character he has played, he just isn’t sharing it. It sounds that a backstory has been developed, likely to be revealed in the future, that J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson had shared with the actor but have asked him not to reveal the details.

According to Serkis:

“We wanted him to have a great deal of mystery, but we did … J.J. and I discussed it, and Rian and I did discuss backstories to him, where he came from. I’ve been asked to not shed anything, should we want to bring him back in any way whether [in a] prequel or whatever. I think there’s something cool about that. It still does remain a mystery for people. I know that some people find it incredibly frustrating, but I think it allows for further exploration and layering at a further point.”

These details will likely be flushed out in a future movie, television show, set of books, or comics, but for the time being will remain a mystery. Who Supreme Leader Snoke is, what his powers are, how he previously was involved with Luke Skywalker, what his plans were are all things that we’re dying to know more of.

That being said, the actor did drop one hint about the backstory when it comes to Rey:

“I played him as incredibly threatened by this female, which he’s not used to or doesn’t understand. He completely underestimates Rey, obviously, but he can sense that there’s a strength there that certainly Kylo Ren doesn’t have. I would say he’s pretty misogynistic in that respect. Interestingly. For our time.”

We’ve been by Abrams that Snoke isn’t a Sith though is “a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.” We’ve also learned that he is from the Unknown Regions which helps show how he can be part of the Dark Side and not follow the Sith code which is so prevalent in the galaxy we know of. It is through the use of a contingency plan which had many Imperial officers and more running to the Unknown Regions which allowed for his rise to occur.

How this occurred, what Snoke knew to allow this to happen, and every other aspect of his life remains a mystery to us.

Do you hope that Lucasfilm has plans int he near future to address more of the history of Snoke? Will Serkis ever share these details with us? Share your thoughts below!
