When principal photography began on Han Solo a couple weeks back we thought the main cast had already been signed up but now it appears that Michael K. Williams (‘The Wire’,’12 Years a Slave’) will also be part of the ensemble. In fact, he might just be playing the villain!
The untitled Han Solo movie isn’t Williams first role in genre work having been in ‘RoboCop,’ ‘Assassin’s Creed,’ and ‘Ghostbusters’ among others, but as anything related to ‘Star Wars’ this will be his largest one. While his exact role is, of course, being kept under wraps, rumors put him square into the role of the film’s villain.
He’ll be joining a cast that already consists of Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Joonas Suotamo. Doing a film that revolves around the biggest scoundrel in ‘Star Wars’ history is a risky move by Lucasfilm as the idea of recasting Harrison Ford just seems ludicrous. Of the announced casting the only details we know so far is that “Ehrenreich is Han Solo, Glover is Lando, and Suotamo is Chewbacca.”
Personally, I’ve loved his work ever since initially seeing him as Omar Little in ‘The Wire’ and am very eager to see what he’ll bring to a movie set in a galaxy far, far away. I’m hoping the rumor is true as Williams can truly play a vicious character though it would be nice to see him on the side of angels as well. Not that there will be many angels as we see Solo as a young smuggler.
I’m sure most of the cast will be scoundrels and rogues of some sort.
